Getting Around Amsterdam

Strippenkaarts:
Strippenkaarts are valid on all buses, trams and metro lines in the city and offer the most economical option for visitors. Strippenkaarts are sold at all rail stations, newspaper shops, post offices and all Albert Hein supermarkets.

Prices (in Euros) 2 strips (single journey, one zone) 1,60 3 strips (single journey, two zones) 2,40 8 strips (also valid as one-day ticket) 6,40 15 strips, full fare
(multiple journey, advance sale only) 6,50 15 strips, concessionary fare*
(multiple journey, advance sale only) 4,30 45 strips (multiple journey, advance sale only) 19,20 * Elderly over 65 and children under 12

How to use the Strippenkaarts:
Check the map located at each stop or onboard to determine how many zones you require. Validate the strippenkaart by stamping it in the yellow machines onboard or get a stamp from the driver. Validate according to the number of zones you will pass, plus one. For example, if you are traveling within one zone, validate two strips; If traveling across two zones, validate three units. Note: Multiple passengers can travel on a single strippenkaard as long as the proper number of strips is validated for each rider. Ticket validity depends upon the number of strips used as follows:

Number of zones (strips cancelled) Validity
1-3 zones (2-4 strips) 1 hour
4-6 zones (5-7 strips) 1.5 hours
7-9 zones (8-10 strips) 2 hours
10-15 zones (11-16 strips) 3 hours
16 or more zones (17-20 strips) 3.5 hours

travel using Strippen tickets and GVB season tickets
As well as Dutch Railways (NS) tickets, you can also use the following GVB tickets for second-class rail travel within the Amsterdam transport region.

· Strippen tickets. Validate in the usual way: one strip more than the number of zones being traveled. Validation machines are located at the entrance to station platforms. Validity periods are same as listed above.

· Season tickets. Only three-star or higher season tickets with zone 5700 (Amsterdam City Center) as the selected zone are valid for rail travel in Amsterdam.

Strip tickets and season tickets may only be used for rail travel on the following routes.

· Bijlmer - Duivendrecht - Amstel - Muiderpoort - Amsterdam Centraal - Sloterdijk - Lelylaan.

· Zuid WTC - RAI - Duivendrecht - Diemen-Zuid

· Muiderpoort - Diemen.

Note that GVB tickets are not valid for travel to and from Amsterdam Schiphol.

If you want to spend one or more days exploring Amsterdam, then a 24-, 48- or 72-hours ticket could be for you.

The ticket only needs to be stamped once, at the beginning of your first journey, and is then valid on all GVB day and night services for the period indicated. These tickets are particularly attractive if you plan to make several journeys a day by public transport.

For children from 4 to 11 year old, Dutch citizens of 65 and up in possession of a senior citizen's pass or a valid identification card, foreigners of 65 and up in possession of a valid passport, dogs (small dogs and other small pets transported in a bag which can easily be carried, or on a leash on your lap are allowed to travel free of charge), bicycles (in the designated areas in the metros and tram 26).
